Domestic Violence Does Not Discriminate
It’s a common misconception that domestic violence only affects women, or people with a low self-esteem, when in reality, domestic violence can happen in all communities and at all income levels, it has no age limit and can occur from teens to the elderly. Oklahoma has the highest rates of domestic violence out of all 50 states in the U.S. According to World Population Review, about 49.1 percent of women in Oklahoma and 40.7 percent of men have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime. On average, about once every 5 days in Oklahoma, a person dies from Domestic Violence.
The Definition of Domestic Violence in Oklahoma includes acts of physical harm or threats of physical harm against a family member, household member, or intimate partner. Domestic violence laws in Oklahoma apply to adults over the age of 18, emancipated minors, and children aged 13 or older, who commit the crime against other adults or minors who meet the same criteria.
Through this project, The Kaw Nation Family Trauma Healing Center staff wants to share different survivor stories and victims of homicide stories, to inform people on all the different types of abuse victims and survivors have experienced. Consent
Consent Is defined as positive cooperation; it must be freely and voluntarily given, and all participants must have knowledge and understanding of the act. Lack of consent includes but is not limited to, the use of a weapon, physical violence or restraints, verbal threats, intimidation, and threats of retaliation or harm. Consent cannot be given where force or threat of force, coercion or fraud is used to gain compliance. When someone is incapacitated due to alcohol or other drugs. When someone is asleep or unconscious. When someone is under the legal age of consent. Remember consent can also be revoked even in the middle of a sex act.
