Application Procedure
- Applicants must submit to the Committee by December of the year prior to her intended reign:
- Photograph in traditional Kaw Dress;
- Biography; and
- Letter of intent, including why she desires to become Kaw Princess and how she will serve.
- The Committee shall notify applicants of their decision by January 31st of the year of her proposed reign.
- If chosen as Kaw Princess, she must provide written notice of acceptance by February 28th of the year of her reign.
Princess Materials
- The Committee shall provide the Princess with a Princess Packet. The Princess must sign an acknowledgment of receiving the packet. This packet must contain:
- A list of eligibility requirements;
- Kaw Nation History; and
- Kaw Nation Tribal information.
Requirements During Reign
- The Princess must wear Kaw traditional dress at all Powwow and ceremonial functions where she represents Kaw Nation. Traditional dress includes:
- Broadcloth skirt with pleat;
- Traditional Kaw shirt;
- Yarn belt;
- Traditional moccasins; and
- May, at her discretion, wear leggings.
- The Princess must be of good character, be willing to greet the public, and represent Kaw Nation appropriately.
- The Princess must be of Kaw descent.
- The Princess must be a current student in Junior High, High School, or College and be between the ages of fourteen (14) and twenty-one (21).
- The Princess must be single and with no children and must have never been previously married.
- The Princess must be able to represent Kaw Nation at a minimum of five (5) Powwows and more if possible. The five (5) Powwows include:
- Washunga Days Powwow;
- Kaw Nation Powwow;
- Standing Bear; and
- Two (2) other Powwows within a fifty (50) mile radius of Kaw Nation.
- The Princess must attend other cultural or public relation events as requested by the Committee or Tribal Council.
- The Princess shall verify by photo and flyer submitted to the Committee Chair or Secretary that she attended each night of the required Powwows and other events to confirm attendance requirements are being met.
- The Princess must know and perform all appropriate dances.
- The Princess must wear Kaw Crown and banner at all required Powwows.
- The Princess cannot hold any other Princess title until her reign is over.
- The Princess must check-in with the Committee one (1) hour prior to the Kaw Nation Powwow and Washunga Days Powwow.
- The Princess must participate in all afternoon and evening sessions at the Kaw Nation Powwow and Washunga Days Powwow in traditional dress.
- The Princess must learn enough Kaw language, enabling her to give a greeting and prayer at public events.
- The Princess must sit in the Powwow arena if seating for the Princess is provided.
- The Princess shall ride in the Washunga Days parade and attend the Princess Luncheon in clothing respectful to the Kaw Nation tribe and culture.
Interested candidates are urged to read the requirements and submit photo of themselves in traditional Kaw dress. Please fill all the required blanks below. The application will be forwarded onto the Cultural Committee for review.
