Protecting Water Resources: Kaw Nation’s Commitment to Water Quality
The Kaw Nation Environmental Department (KNED) plays a vital role in safeguarding water quality for the Kaw Nation community and surrounding areas. Through its water quality program, KNED works to protect and improve water resources, including Kaw Lake, which serves as a crucial water source for approximately 100,000 individuals in the region. The department’s efforts encompass monitoring, assessment, and management of water quality in rivers, lakes, and groundwater within tribal lands. KNED collaborates with state and federal agencies to implement water quality standards, conduct regular testing, and address potential contamination issues. By focusing on safe drinking water and supporting water treatment plants and distribution systems, the department ensures that tribal members and the public have access to clean, safe water. Additionally, KNED’s water quality program extends to watershed protection initiatives, particularly for the Arkansas River, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to preserving this essential natural resource for current and future generations.
